Mastering the Data Deluge: Optimizing Trace Volume with OpenTelemetry and Tail-Based Sampling

About this Session

Scale brings complexity, and with it, an overwhelming volume of distributed tracing data. Left unmanaged, this data deluge inflates observability costs and strains system performance. This hands-on workshop provides a technical deep dive into taking back control of your telemetry using OpenTelemetry (OTel) and tail-based sampling.

 

In the lab, you will stand up an OpenTelemetry gateway and configure intelligent tail-based sampling policies based on latency, error rates, and custom business attributes. By validating these configurations in real time using Datadog Application Performance Monitoring (APM), you will learn how to successfully eliminate noisy, zero-value traces without compromising system visibility. Join us to learn how to cut through the noise, dramatically optimize your APM spend, and focus your engineering efforts on the signals that actually matter.
